DESCRIPTION:Brian Ferneyhough La Chute d’Icare\, for mixed Ensemble (1988)* \nDmitri Kourliandski Banlieu\, for flute\, clarinet\, accordion\, violin\, viola\, cello\, double bass\, live-electronics (2023\, world premiere)** \nFrancesco Filidei Finito Ogni Gesto\, for flute\, clarinet\, horn\, percussion\, violin\, cello (2010) \nElena Rykova In the Presence of Absence\, for clarinet\, accordion\, piano\, violin\, cello\, amplification\, electronics (2022\, Austrian premiere) \nFrancesca Verunelli Cinemaolio\, for flute\, clarinet\, piano\, violin\, viola\, cello (2014) \n\n\n\n\n  \nA festival is by definition a time of celebration\, and there are many things we want to celebrate in the program of the Opening Concert of the 8th Edition of the impuls Festival: on the occasion of his 80th birthday\, we pay homage to Brian Ferneyhough\, and welcome Francesco Filidei and Francesca Verunelli\, who are tutoring at the impuls Academy for the first time. \nCertainly there is\, of course\, the new works: the Austrian premiere of an Ulysses Network commission to Elena Rykova and a new composition by Dmitri Kourliandksi\, created especially for Ensemble Schallfeld to be premiered at impuls 2023; and finally\, we also celebrate Schallfeld’s fifth participation in impuls during the tenth anniversary year of the ensemble. \nThe common thread of this program is the inspiration from extra-musical elements: Whether it is a historical painting (as in “La Chute d’Icare”)\, or the illusion of movement created by static images (as in “Cinemaolio”)\, a poem by Eduardo Sanguineti (in the case of “Finito Ogni Gesto”)\, or places\, lonely inner places in the case of Rykova\, or quite real and quite crowded ones in the case of Kourliandski. Through ekphrasis or synesthesia\, the music always seems to act as a metaphorical space. Therefore\, the score itself lends itself to becoming an abstract place that can be (re)written\, measured\, or “inhabited”. \n\nSchallfeld is an international ensemble for contemporary music based in Graz. The group sparks the interest of its audience by its vivid virtuosity and refined chamber music sound\, paired with interpretations that pay special attention to concert format\, creating events that adapt to the specific venue while aiming for a new dimension of listening. The ensemble was founded in 2013 by alumni of Klangforum Wien and composition students of Kunstuniversität Graz. It currently consists of musicians from 8 nationalities and reflects the diversity and different interests of its members in its artistic direction. In the last few years\, Schallfeld has been able to establish itself on international stages through exciting programming with a focus on young composers\, innovative concert-stagings as well as through the quality of its collective improvisations and innovative use of live-electronics. Schallfeld sees its mission in bringing music of international young composers to Austria and acting as an ambassador for new music production abroad. \nBesides its own concert cycle in Graz\, Schallfeld is regularly guest in festivals in Austria and abroad. Das titelgebende Stück „the new normal“ von William Dougherty konfrontiert uns mit der Frage nach sozialer Ungleichheit (auf der ganzen Welt wie auch im Heimatland des Komponisten\, den USA) und vermittelt dies auf direkte Weise an das Publikum. Dougherty komponiert dazu eine dichte Collage aus ethnomusikologischem Material\, Zitaten aus alter Musik und anderen Samples. Die Frage nach Normen und „common ground truth“ beschäftigt auch die Naturwissenschaft\, wo der Fund neuer Phänomene wie etwa in der Astrophysik ganze Weltmodelle in Frage stellen kann. Ausgehend von scheinbar objektiven wissenschaftlichen Phänomenen (Oxidation und Hybridisierung) führen uns die Werke von Milica Djordjevic und Misato Mochizuki in den Zwiespalt zwischen Stasis und Veränderung\, Vertrautheit und Entfremdung und lassen uns auf emotionale Weise an Transformationsprozessen teilhaben. \nAuch Claudio Panariello (Styrian Artist in Residence 2022) führt uns in seinem Stück „to learn the obscene art of suffering pain“ in ein Zwischenreich. Er reflektiert über innere\, existenzielle Prozesse des Schmerzes und seiner möglichen Narrativität in unserer Gesellschaft. Dazu entwirft er ein akustisches Modell das den „unmöglichen“ antiphonalen Dialog zwischen Innenwelt und Außenwelt simuliert und lässt ein (menschliches) Instrumentalensemble mit seinem unsichtbaren Doppelgänger – einem von Piezomikrofonen und Lautsprechern angetriebenen Rückkopplungssystem – in Kontakt treten. \n  \n„The New Normal“ zeigt die Konfrontation mit dringenden sozio-politischen und existenziellen Themen auf\, die wir während der Pandemie sowie in den letzten Monaten vergessen oder völlig neu kontextualisiert haben\, und führt diese Auseinandersetzung auf musikalischer Ebene. Vielleicht kann uns so das Erlebnis von Unsicherheit im Hören\, das Suchen nach akustischem „common ground“ dabei unterstützen\, der Suche nach neuen Normalitäten in unserem Leben gelassener zu begegnen.[:]

From the very beginning\, the project has seen itself as a laboratory\, where medial interlacings with a focal point on impulses are put into practice. In specific\, literary texts\, as well as the active exchange between composer and the author\, hereby provide the initial impulses for new compositions. The intention of the project does not pursue a classical setting such as words to music\, nor a simple translation of the words with voices\, nor tonal representations of the texts – what is called for is rather texts functioning as movens with their\, for example\, rhythmic and syntactic qualities\, in its tonal coloration\, its timbre\, in its atmospheric or thematic density\, as semantic abutment\, … \nThe experimental setup of „Text im Klang” has always been slightly modified throughout the years: in 2014 and 2016\, texts by various Austrian authors served the composers in various pairings as a source of inspiration; in the performances\, music and text were sometimes intertwined\, the latter read by actors or the authors themselves\, sometimes being integrated directly in the composition itself live or f.e. as an edited or processed recording. In 2018 in turn\, the focus for all composers was put on one specific short text\, and in 2020\, both text and music were created from scratch on a jointly developed theme. \nLike in former years\, with Ensemble Schallfeld also the musicians of course play an important role in the project\, being included in the process from the very beginning and standing in close connection especially with the composers for the realisation of their new works. Throughout the different editions\, Ensemble Schallfeld has hereby presented itself in various line-ups. \nFor 2022\, impuls has been able to interest Ferdinand Schmatz for the project\, whose „das gehörte feuer. orphische skizzen“ (2016) not only thematically and in terms of sound language offers an ideal starting point for four new compositions commissioned by impuls. The world premieres and the reading is presented in a dramaturgically developed evening on November 5th\, which concludes the following day\, with an open brunch\, including reflections on the overall process of the project and a discussion with the audience on their impressions.
