SUMMARY:Workshop for violoncello and live electronics - Milan Conservatory
DESCRIPTION:The workshop is intended to be an experience of professional collaboration between composers and electronic performers with the aim of creating new contemporary chamber music repertoire for cello and live electronics. \nThe workshop will focus on the production of new pieces written by the participants\, exploring the extended instrumental possibilities of the instrument and investigating the relationships between this and electronics. The history of music teaches us that the combination of skills and the intellectual exchange between the personalities involved in the realisation of a piece can become the key to the research and development of new artistic-musical languages. DESCRIPTION:Luigi Nono’s 100th birthday on January 29\, 2024 is the occasion for an Italian program focus: the Minguet Quartet celebrates it with his string quartet and older pieces to which Nono refers in it. Already in November\, our »Great Talent« Anton Gerzenberg and Marco Stroppa will interpret\, among others\, Nono’s »Traiettoria«\, a concerto for piano and electronic sounds and one of the great masterpieces of the 1980s. In March\, the Schallfeld Ensemble\, founded by students of Klangforum Wien in Graz\, will present works by Scelsi and Sciarrino as well as string trios by young Italian composers. DESCRIPTION:Pierre Jodlowksi Time & Money\, for percussion\, video\, electronics (2006) \nPierre Jodlowksi Criogenesis\, for cello\, text (2007) \nPierre Jodlowksi Outer Space\, for trombone\, electronics\, video\, lights (2018) \nPierre Jodlowksi People / Time\, for 5 musicians\, video\, electronics (2003) \n— \nPierre Jodlowski is a composer\, performer and multimedia artist. His music\, which is often made by means of a high level of joy\, spans the genre between acoustic and electronic music and is often directed towards a dramatic and political core. His work has taken him to France and abroad\, where he has been involved in the creation of venues for new music\, classical music and\, for example\, for tango\, theatre\, art and electronic music. DESCRIPTION:Beat Furrer – intorno al bianco \nKatherina Klement – Monde II – Fortschreibung (WP) \nSehyung Kim – NN (WP) \nCarlo Elia Praderio – Dune (WP) \n  \nSchallfeld Ensemble misses the acoustic connections to the physical world. Carlo Elia Praderio calls his new work Dune. For him\, the gradual transitions from solo instrument to ensemble in this acoustic “dune” are metaphors for climate change: small changes with big effects. \nKatharina Klement also relates individuals and space: in Monde II\, she uses the sounds of concrete mixers filled with different materials such as sand or wood. She transfers the resulting loops into a circular spatial concept\, analogous to the model of several moons that individually circle to form an open whole\, thus creating a coherent monde (world). \nBeat Furrer’s Intorno al bianco for clarinet and string quartet is also about communication between the ensemble and the individual. Sehyung Kim sets nine instruments in relation to live electronics and the theme of plastic. \n  \nThe compositions by Sehyung Kim and Katharina Klement are commissioned by ORF musikprotokoll. The composition by Carlo Elia Praderio is a commission by Schallfeld Ensemble\, part of a series of new works that Schallfeld was able to commission thanks to the Province of Styria’s Großer Interpretationspreis 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Brian Ferneyhough La Chute d’Icare\, for mixed Ensemble (1988)* \nDmitri Kourliandski Banlieu\, for flute\, clarinet\, accordion\, violin\, viola\, cello\, double bass\, live-electronics (2023\, world premiere)** \nFrancesco Filidei Finito Ogni Gesto\, for flute\, clarinet\, horn\, percussion\, violin\, cello (2010) \nElena Rykova In the Presence of Absence\, for clarinet\, accordion\, piano\, violin\, cello\, amplification\, electronics (2022\, Austrian premiere) \nFrancesca Verunelli Cinemaolio\, for flute\, clarinet\, piano\, violin\, viola\, cello (2014) \n\n\n\n\n  \nA festival is by definition a time of celebration\, and there are many things we want to celebrate in the program of the Opening Concert of the 8th Edition of the impuls Festival: on the occasion of his 80th birthday\, we pay homage to Brian Ferneyhough\, and welcome Francesco Filidei and Francesca Verunelli\, who are tutoring at the impuls Academy for the first time. \nCertainly there is\, of course\, the new works: the Austrian premiere of an Ulysses Network commission to Elena Rykova and a new composition by Dmitri Kourliandksi\, created especially for Ensemble Schallfeld to be premiered at impuls 2023; and finally\, we also celebrate Schallfeld’s fifth participation in impuls during the tenth anniversary year of the ensemble. \nThe common thread of this program is the inspiration from extra-musical elements: Whether it is a historical painting (as in “La Chute d’Icare”)\, or the illusion of movement created by static images (as in “Cinemaolio”)\, a poem by Eduardo Sanguineti (in the case of “Finito Ogni Gesto”)\, or places\, lonely inner places in the case of Rykova\, or quite real and quite crowded ones in the case of Kourliandski. Through ekphrasis or synesthesia\, the music always seems to act as a metaphorical space. Therefore\, the score itself lends itself to becoming an abstract place that can be (re)written\, measured\, or “inhabited”. \n\nSchallfeld is an international ensemble for contemporary music based in Graz. The group sparks the interest of its audience by its vivid virtuosity and refined chamber music sound\, paired with interpretations that pay special attention to concert format\, creating events that adapt to the specific venue while aiming for a new dimension of listening. The ensemble was founded in 2013 by alumni of Klangforum Wien and composition students of Kunstuniversität Graz. It currently consists of musicians from 8 nationalities and reflects the diversity and different interests of its members in its artistic direction. In the last few years\, Schallfeld has been able to establish itself on international stages through exciting programming with a focus on young composers\, innovative concert-stagings as well as through the quality of its collective improvisations and innovative use of live-electronics. Schallfeld sees its mission in bringing music of international young composers to Austria and acting as an ambassador for new music production abroad. \nBesides its own concert cycle in Graz\, Schallfeld is regularly guest in festivals in Austria and abroad.
