SUMMARY:Music Biennale Munich: Xochiyaoyotl
DESCRIPTION:In a world where gods were fed by humans\, a child is trained to fight in war and preserve the sun god with his life.“Xochiyaoyotl“\, translated as ‘flower wars’\, recalls rituals of Aztec martial arts that was wiped out by the Spanish conquest. We can only imagine what this combat – that challenged the belief in tomorrow every night anew – looked like.David Camargo\, Amauta García and Maximiliano Soto Mayorga develop a music theatre piece that lies between myth and memory\, in which music\, space and performance emerge from the physicality of the combatants. “Xochiyaoyotl” is the winner of the OPEN CALL of the Münchener Biennale on the theme of “martial arts”. Chosen from among 85 submissions\, the production was selected by an international jury consisting of Carola Bauckholt\, Kenny Savelson\, Vigdís Jakobsdóttir\, Martin Minarik\, Sarah Maria Sun\, and Toshiki Okada. \n\n\n\nComposition:MAXIMILIANO SOTO MAYORGA \n\n\n\nSet\, costume and instrument design:DAVID CAMARGO \n\n\n\nLibretto\, video\, dramaturgy:AMAUTA GARCÍA \n\n\n\nDramaturgy:JULIAN KÄMPER \n\n\n\nSoprano:LAURE-CATHERINE BEYERS \n\n\n\nCountertenor:JOHANNES WIENERS \n\n\n\nPercussion:MATHIAS LACHENMAYR\,DAAN WILMS \n\n\n\nContrabass-clarinet:PAULA HÄNI \n\n\n\nElectric guitar:JOHANNES ÖLLINGER \n\n\n\nCello:MYRIAM GARCÍA FIDALGO

SUMMARY:Ist das Oper oder kann das weg?
DESCRIPTION:Several tables\, packed with dishes\, glasses\, stuff and junk. Is that art or can it be thrown away? Here\, trivial things come to life and tell an ambiguous story with an absurd ending. A mini-drama that unfolds at the kitchen table. Curtain up and join in! Ist das Oper oder kann das weg? (eng. Is that Opera or can it be thrown away?) is a music theatre education project in response format. \n\n\n\n(c) ORF musikprotokoll\, Martin Gross\n\n\n\nInspired by the contemporary music theatre piece L’opera (forse) (eng. The maybe opera) by the Italian composer Francesco Filidei (with a libretto by Pierre Senges)\, several teams of students work on their own visions and versions of a ‘table and pocket opera’ in which everyday objects become musical instruments or scenic characters. Six classes from Styrian secondary schools develop their own ideas of what art is and what can be ‘left out’ based on Filidei’s anti-opera. The students learn to apply their practical skills creatively by working in groups\, with each group making an independent contribution to the overall performance. The project uses the potential of opera as a multidisciplinary art form: just as many trades come together in the theatre\, the students implement their own ideas for Filidei’s piece in an interdisciplinary way: texts\, costumes and scenography\, alternative dramaturgies and their own musical compositions for new scenes. \n\n\n\n(c) Ivan Bandic\n\n\n\nA team of experts in music and theatre education\, together with members of Schallfeld\, is developing a workshop concept in collaboration with teachers from several Styrian secondary and vocational schools that is tailored to the respective classes and school situations and takes into account the abilities of the students and their respective specialisations (craftsmanship\, music\, visual arts). A total of three schools with two classes each will be involved. The results will be part of several concerts by the Schallfeld Ensemble\, in which both the original and the new perspectives will be presented. The low-threshold encounter with contemporary art and opera will spark curiosity about cultural activities. At the same time\, contemporary music will be made more accessible. The original setup of L’opera (forse) serves as the starting point in the workshops for new instruments as well as for writing and composing one’s own scenes. Everyday objects (bottles\, cutlery\, crockery…) become a creative field of experimentation for making sound generators or scenic objects. In addition\, the question arises: Could there be other twists instead of the tragic ending in Filidei? The project promotes interdisciplinary engagement with music and theatre while also providing a creative approach to sustainability\, as everyday materials and ‘junk’ are upcycled to become components of a musical theatre production. \n\n\n\nFilidei’s piece shows in a congenial way how the seemingly irreconcilable can come together: how poetry can arise from trash\, how kitchen Latin can be combined with profound philosophy\, and how music can be created from everyday gestures and objects. At the same time\, L’opera (forse) offers a broad framework for reflection through its multi-layered themes. The opera’s format\, in which an unlikely love story between a fish and a bird ends tragically – both end up as a banquet on Filidei’s table – makes it possible to talk about serious topics such as social exclusion and unequal friendships in a witty\, poetic and ironic way. Ist das Oper oder kann das weg? invites young people to bring their own social and future designs onto the stage in a poetic way. The project is made possible by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMore info: office (at) schallfeldensemble.com

SUMMARY:Workshop presentation KONSonanzen - Schallfeld Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:In der Schwebe – 100 Jahre Morton Feldman\n\n\n\n\nOn the occasion of the 100th birthday of Morton Feldman (1926– 1987)\, this concert is dedicated to works that focus on listening itself – beyond clear forms\, categories and traditions.Feldman’s ‘Between Categories’ is symbolic of music that moves between sound and silence\, structure and dissolution. Francesco Filidei’s ‘Corde vuote’ and Arvo Pärt’s ‘Fratres’ also follow this search for the essential\, for the inner resonance of sound. Together\, the works create a state of suspension – sensitive\, open\, concentrated. In this intergenerational exchange about the quiet possibilities of music\, members of the Schallfeld Ensemble perform together with pupils\, students and undergraduates from the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory and participants in the supplementary subject ‘New Sounds’.

DESCRIPTION:Programme\n\n\n\nPATRICIA ALESSANDRINI (b. 1970) A place no one lives for soprano and ensemble (an extended version for live performance) (world première) [1] \n\n\n\nBEAT FURRER (b. 1954) Aria for soprano and six instruments \n\n\n\nEDA ER (b. 1989) Happily Ever After \n\n\n\nPATRICIA ALESSANDRINI New commission (for 2 sopranos and ensemble) (world première) [1] \n\n\n\n[1] Commissioned by Wigmore Hall (with the generous support of the Marchus Trust and the Wigmore Hall Endowment Fund) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOverview\n\n\n\nPatricia Alessandrini’s intricate sound sculptures encompass a seemingly unlimited range of tonal colours and textures\, both acoustic and electronic. The American composer and sound artist\, whose teachers include Tristan Murail and Thea Musgrave\, received praise from Gramophone for ‘her formidably disciplined manipulation of febrile emotions’. Her captivating art\, including a major new composition\, is complemented by the restless energy of Beat Furrer’s Aria from 1998-9.

SUMMARY:Schallfeld Ensemble - Text im Klang #7
DESCRIPTION:Klaus Kastberger Introduction to the work of Friederike Mayröcker \n\n\n\nLuca Bardelle New Work (2026\, world premiere) \n\n\n\nForrest Moody New Work (2026\, world premiere) \n\n\n\nDilay Doğanay New Work (2026\, world premiere) \n\n\n\nJoanna Wozny New Work (2026\, world premiere) \n\n\n\nSchallfeld Ensemble \n\n\n\nElisa Azzarà flute \n\n\n\nSzilárd Benes clarinet \n\n\n\nNN piano \n\n\n\nLorenzo Derinni violin \n\n\n\nMyriam García Fidalgo cello \n\n\n\n„Text im Klang” is already looking forward to its 7th edition in 2026. From the very beginning\, the project has seen itself as a laboratory\, where medial interlacings with a focal point on impulses are put into practice. In specific\, literary texts as well as the active exchange between composer and author hereby provide the initial impulses for new compositions. The intention of the project hereby does not pursue a classical setting such as words to music\, nor a simple translation of the words with voices\, nor tonal representations of the texts – what is called for is rather texts functioning as movens with their\, for example\, rhythmic and syntactic qualities\, in its tonal coloration\, its timbre\, in its atmospheric or thematic density\, as semantic abutment\, … Hereby the experimental setup of „Text im Klang” has always been slightly modified throughout the years: in 2014 and 2016\, preselected texts by various Austrian authors served the composers in various pairings as a source of inspiration; in the performances\, music and text were sometimes intertwined\, the latter read by actors or the authors themselves\, sometimes being integrated directly in the composition itself live or e.g. as an edited or processed recording. In 2018 in turn\, the focus for all composers was put on one specific short text\, in 2020\, both text and music were created from scratch on a jointly developed theme. In 2022 Ferdinand Schmatz´s „das gehörte feuer. orphische skizzen“ was the starting point for the new compositions\, which partly included fragments of the text both in acoustic and visual ways aside from other parts being read by the author\, and in 2024 Elfriede Jelinek agreed that any of her numerous texts could function as impulse and starting point for new musical works\, which that time were written for the very classical line-up of Schubert´s Forellenquintett. \n\n\n\nLike in former years\, with Schallfeld Ensemble also the musicians of course play an important role in the project\, being included in the process from the very beginning and standing in close connection specially with the composers for the realization of their new works. Throughout the different editions Schallfeld Ensemble has hereby presented itself in various line-ups. \n\n\n\nIn 2026 five years will have passed since the death of one of the Grandes Dames of Austrian literature\, Elfriede Mayröcker. With unwavering curiosity\, she worked until the very end on a multi-award-winning body of work comprising over 120 books — with numerous references to music\, visual arts\, philosophy\, and poetry. Its magic\, visual power\, and poetic radicalism had a decisive influence on German-language literature. Klaus Kastberger\, who has worked and published on her oeuvre\, accompanies the project as an intermediary to the writer and her literary work as well as to her musical preferences\, giving an introduction also at the day of the premieres. Once more „Text im Klang“ offers a dramaturgically coherent program on October 16th\, and concludes the following day with an open brunch\, allowing reflections on the overall process of the project and an exchange with the audience on their impressions.
